The six questions that decide it
1. Can you hear the song before you pay? The most important question, and one many services answer "no" to. A free sample of your actual song turns the purchase from a gamble into a decision. The human-songwriter services we checked don't offer it — the commissioned work happens after you commit. Among AI services, some do, some play a locked teaser, and some generate nothing until you've paid.
2. How many tries do you get? A first draft is a first draft. If retrying costs money or is capped at "one round of minor edits", you're stuck with whatever comes back. The place to look is before payment: unlimited free regeneration beats any after-sales revision policy.
3. How fast is it, really? Compare standard delivery, not the rush tier — rush tiers often cost materially more. One live UniqueSong funnel charged $79 for 48-hour delivery and $119 for 30 minutes; Songs With You adds $60–$100 to its week-long standard.
4. Is the MP3 included? Some services deliver a streaming page and sell the download separately — at OurMelody it's a $49.95 "MP3 + Commercial License" add-on. Ask before you buy.
5. What does the recipient actually receive? A raw MP3 in an email isn't a gift. A share page with an album cover and a personal note is. Physical keepsakes are better still, if the occasion warrants unwrapping.
6. What happens if it's wrong? Read the refund policy, not the headline guarantee. At JoyBox, the homepage advertises a money-back guarantee while the refund policy says all sales are final; at OurMelody, the homepage promises a refund after a remake while the terms call the one remake the exclusive remedy.

The biggest name in human-made custom songs: a real artist writes and records from your brief, at $199.99 with delivery in one to seven days, positioned explicitly as "no AI" (checked July 2026). Includes a song page and up to five lines of free lyric revisions requested within 48 hours; extras like an added verse ($65.99), Spotify release ($49.99) and vinyl ($59.99) are separate.

Songlorious — best control over length and format for a human song
Human-led production priced by duration: $80 for 30 seconds up to $265 for three minutes, delivered in one to four days, with add-ons for publishing, cassette and a commercial licence (+$150).
Trade-off: the per-minute model adds up fast, rush is +$80, and cancellation within 24 hours still costs 35%.
Songoven — best rock-bottom price
$19.90 gets you two AI-generated versions within an hour, with unlimited lyric regeneration before generation. The cheapest verified way into the category.
